I taught Title 1 Math for ten years at the start of my career, went through the change to Chapter 1, then taught 3rd grade for 13 years and am now in the 2nd year back in Title. My big "thing" for now is to come up with a theme and activities for our spring math night...last year I did math games from around the World...Any ideas would be appreciated.:)

math night

One year we did Domino Math (gave away sets of dominoes as door prizes) after we taught them the games), and another time we did card games. This doesn't sound nearly as interesting as your theme of games from around the world. But the kids and their parents enjoyed both.

Thanks!

Thanks...I have to have activities that are age-appropriate across the board. Although I have 2nd-5th grade, there are even parents who bring their pre-k children--so I want to have enough going that I can have something for each developmental level. :)
The Dominoes sound interesting. I think they would fit in with most any theme.

Dominoes

I think so too. There are so many kinds of dominoes and activities. I even had one set that was tactile - they had to match like textures! There are some activities with cards for lower levels as well - sorting by suit (shape), color, number; putting numbers in order from least to greatest, computation, etc. But everyone really enjoyed the dominoes.

Good Luck.

math family night!:)

I have decided to go with the theme "Math Around the House" since I did "Math Around the World" last year. I am getting excited about all the things I can do to branch off with the idea!

math around the house

Hello,
I am looking for ideas for my first family math night. When I read your theme for this year: Math Around the House and last year Math Around the World. I was very intrigued. We have a very diverse student population. I also teach Title 1 students grades 1-3 and I would be interested in hearing about your ideas. You can reach me at Casey1361@aol.com. I look forward to sharing.
Thanks again,
Joanne

Sorry I have taken so long! (had Strep)

The Math Around the World night that I put together last year was basically a games night...I researched (on the internet) the history of some old familiar board games like checkers and dominoes...Then, I have a big book published by Highlights about games from around the world, and my Title 1 Reading team teacher and I made some of those games a little bigger and I also have a book for upper elementary about math games from around the world which includes the information, Where's the math?. There is another volume that is similar that is More math from Around the World.

Basically, I had about 20 different games, 5 copies of each. We marked them with codes as to primary, or intermediate, and made a menu up to give to the parents and children as they came in...

During my teaching day, I trained 5th graders to do the centers, and asked parental permission for those who were interested in helping me during the math night...I had 11 volunteer child helpers! :)

We schedule our family nights during the School Library book fair evening, and I did the unthinkable--I made a monkey out of our superintendent. Bless his heart, he is very willing to help out...I asked him to be Curious George and read a story to the children. They had a blast, and he really did enjoy himself, too!!! A former colleague does Origami and has Computer math games that he has invented and he graciously volunteered to do a center also. He was very good for the presentation, also.
We gave away several books from the book fair as door prizes. I think it was a very good evening. We had about 45 people in attendance.

math night for primary grades

I want to have a night based on the standards, so my parents can see that math is not just adding and subtracting! Any game ideas would be helpful...

Title I math teacher

We are having a Reading and Math Safari for our family night. There will be 10 activities for families to do together, including pizza fractions with real pizza, and a trail mix station for recipe reading. Our other activities involve tangrams, estimation, sentence structure, measurement, storytelling, etc. Each student receives a safari visor to wear, then after finishing the activities will receive a goody bag full of safari related items such as bookmarks, suncatchers, weaving mats, and other fun things. We had to get permission from our state department to order the items for the bags with our Title money.
