Sorry I have taken so long! (had Strep)
The Math Around the World night that I put together last year was basically a games night...I researched (on the internet) the history of some old familiar board games like checkers and dominoes...Then, I have a big book published by Highlights about games from around the world, and my Title 1 Reading team teacher and I made some of those games a little bigger and I also have a book for upper elementary about math games from around the world which includes the information, Where's the math?. There is another volume that is similar that is More math from Around the World.
Basically, I had about 20 different games, 5 copies of each. We marked them with codes as to primary, or intermediate, and made a menu up to give to the parents and children as they came in...
During my teaching day, I trained 5th graders to do the centers, and asked parental permission for those who were interested in helping me during the math night...I had 11 volunteer child helpers!
We schedule our family nights during the School Library book fair evening, and I did the unthinkable--I made a monkey out of our superintendent. Bless his heart, he is very willing to help out...I asked him to be Curious George and read a story to the children. They had a blast, and he really did enjoy himself, too!!! A former colleague does Origami and has Computer math games that he has invented and he graciously volunteered to do a center also. He was very good for the presentation, also.
We gave away several books from the book fair as door prizes. I think it was a very good evening. We had about 45 people in attendance.
