check temp

I am making my first turkey today and I believe the temperature is supposed to be 180 degrees when it is done. If you are unsure call 1 800 Butterball. I have spoken to them several times today and they are extremely helpful! (They probably are beginning to recognize my voice!) Good luck and have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

I checked my old reliable Betty Crocker cook book and it said 6 1/1 - 7 1/2 hours for a turkey that size. That's what I'm cooking too. Now it also will depend on whether you stuff it or not. Stuffed takes longer. Mine is not stuffed and to give it a little head start I put oven on to 350 for a bit and then back to 325.

I never knew you could call Butterball. I'd love to hear some of the questions they get from people. It's go to be hilarious---sort of like some of the "educational" questions we get from parents!

I cooked a 27 pound turkey this week and it took about 6 hours. I don't know if that helps. Do you have a meat thermometer? If you put it in the thigh and it's 180 degrees, you should be able to determine if it's done. Good luck!:s)

A meat thermometer is best, but I usually do 15 minutes per pound. The other thing to do is put a tin foil cover over the breast area until the last hour. Then you can take it off for browning. It keeps that area from getting too dry while the other parts of the turkey cook.

turkey update

it took 6 hours to get to 180 temp and it was wonderful!!!!!!!! Everyone took seconds and i think it was my juicy-est ever!! I brined it this year and it was great. Thanks for all the advice, I used my them. from my smoker that you can put right in the oven and it has a beeper that beeps when it comes to temp.

I hope everyone had a great day, I still have 15 or so people here, i just needed to sit down and rest a bit. what a day
