Any ideas on lessons using a beginners dictionary??

I do TONS of ABC order activities and talk about the dictionary a lot. I wish I had dictionaries for my 1st graders. We do ABC with everything and hopefully this will carry over for dictionary skills.

I do tons of things with picture dictionaries. We have a class set so when I introduce ABC order I start showing them how the dictionary is arranged, how to locate words, how to find page numbers. I give them words to find the defnition for. I ask them to find the page number certain words are on and record it on a sheet also. Towards the end of the year they are even asked to tell me what word comes before and after each word I ask them to look up. By the end of the year they are very familiar with the dictionary and its use.
