Want to begin using 6 Traits - help!

Our school is looking to implement 6 Traits next year and I want to get a head start on it. Currently, I use 4 Blocks in my classroom and use the mini-lessons from that to teach my writing. I am unsure of which of the 6 traits I teach 1st? Do I need to know more information about it before I can begin? I have just found a few sites on the Internet to look at, but have no book and there is no training we can go to this year that is out of state (Iowa). If you have any suggestions on where to begin, I would greatly appreciate it!

6Traits

Hi Carrie,

A wonderful presenter, Kristina Smeckens, came to our school last year. After listening to her, I was sold. Our district bought us the book, 6+1 Traits of Writing by Ruth Culham. It's a great resource. I also attended a seminar that Ruth Culham gave. I suggest getting that book. That's probably where I would start.

book suggestion

Hi Carrie,

I would suggest ordering 6+1 Traits of Writing (for grades 3+, or for primary grades, whichever it is you need) by Ruth Culham. I borrowed it from a colleague, then immediately ordered my own copy. It breaks the traits down and provides teaching suggestions. Hope this helps!

6+1

I agree!! I just got my 6+1 in the mail last week and I love it. It is an easy read and even gives activities to do with each trait. When it says the "complete guide" that is exactly what it is!!

teacher first grade

I just attended the Six traits workshop in Southern California. I have some information I could copy and send you. What grade level are you teaching? It is not about which trait to start with - it is about using all the traits to improve the writing of your students.
