Well...
now I feel guilty because I wasn't planning on doing anything since 3.14 is on Saturday this year.
This was a blast last year!
1. My students had to earn slices (slivers, really) of pie by passing off all their circle formulas at centers. As they finished they colored in a 15 degree "slice of pie." We had already listed the types of pies they would bring and decided on a color coding system, i.e. green for key lime, orange for pumpkin, etc. This also made it easier to serve the pie on PI day. They had to compute the area for the amount of pi they earned in order to get a plate and a fork. They loved it!! Plus, they really remembered the formula for end of year testing in May!
2. We made PI necklaces and held on the spot challenges to see who could repeat the most digits correctly.

3. We did the EdHelper units on Sir Cumference and the Knights of the Round Table and Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi. EdHelper is a subscription service, but there are tons of PI Day stuff online.
4. Students brought in cans and jar of varying sizes and measured them with string. See page 3 in this link: http://community.learnnc.org/dpi/math/archives/2005/06/grades_68_resou.php
5. Memorized Mnemonics for Circle Formulas.
Find the Area and Circumference of a Circle.
Tweedle-dee-dum and Tweedle-dee-dee,
Around the circle is pi times d,
But if the area is declared,
Think of the formula π "r" squared.
***Around the circle" is the circumference.
Circumference = π × d (diameter).
Area = π × r(radius) squared.
Area Of A Circle
Apple pie are square: A = π × r2
Apple pie are round: A = π × r × r

Cherry pie delicious!: C = π × d

My teaching partner does all the math, but we do a huge party for pi day every year.
1. She dresses up like a PIE.
2. We have about 20 room moms come in to volunteers, and the kids bring in pies
3. They graph pie preferences, and then they have to divide the pies into portions equal to the number of children that want that kind of pie (for example, if only 4 kids want a pie, they each get 1/4 of the pie, where the more popular pies, each kids gets about 1/32 of the pie)
4. then, while we eat, we read to them from pictures books: Sir Cumference and the Knights of the Round table, Sir Cumference and the Sword in the Stone, Sir Cumference and the Lady Di Ameter, etc...)
