What grade do you least like to sub in and why? It's first grade for me as the kids are so needy and tend not to know how to quieten down when asked. I don't accept any subbing in first anymore.

How about you?

K and 1st....its crazy how you can be teaching about math and all of the kids will have their hands up. When you call on them they will be like.."one time my dad went fishing..." or "I like chocolate cake..." By the end of the day I'm pulling my hair out because of all of their random stories and comments!!!!

hmmm

Sometimes I don't know what grade i'm getting when I go in the morning, and I have to deal with whatever they give me.

If I get a good Kinder class, I dont' mind K. It can be a nightmare though!!!

I really don't like 3rd grade, or 5th grade. I also don't like life skills or emotional/behavioral classrooms. I don't have the patience! I also won't do gym again, even though its easy, I always hated gym in school.

oh 8th and 9th are tough also!!!

I really like 2nd graders, 4th graders (for the most part), 10-12th grade.

That's Easy

K and 1st are my worst nightmares. I know exactly what a previous poster said about random comments. You know where their minds are and it's not the subject. Also, the hands that go up to ask you a question about something you haven't even gotten around to covering yet.

I like 3rd the best of all the elementary school grades, and I'll take Juniors and Seniors over all others.

4th and 5th grade. These kids will not shut up, the constant tattling, gossiping, teasing, noises. There are just too many in a classroom. 30+ kids is hard to handle. Give me K-3 any day. Especially 2nd and 3rd. 20 kids, much easier to handle.

I like fourth grade

I like fourth grade and under. I am subbing in fourth as a long term sub and I DO know what you mean about NOT shutting up. They have been a handful the last two weeks. Anyway, I will NOT sub for fifth grade and up. I HAVE subbed prek through fourth though and I like all of them. FOURTH IS my favorite though. Even though sometimes they won't shut up, I KNOW it is just the age. I STILL love them ALL

After almost a straight month of K, 1, and special ed., I was so excited to schedule a 3rd grade last week and a 4th this week. Now I can't wait to go to back to the little ones. I'm exhausted after being with them, but they don't tick me off as much as the 3rd and 4th graders did. Much worse attitudes-- talking back, eyes rolling, etc. Of course, it all really depends on the group of kids, no matter what age.

Ok

you all know how I despise kinder. Yes, harsh, but true. So just to be different this time I will say ninth graders.
They are caught between two worlds. They have the hormones goin' and they don't even know it.
The girls are all OMG, rollin eyes, lettin hang out as much as they can get away with, hugging each other because they haven't seen each other since second period, talkin about how they almost got jumped by those girls at Walmart last Saturday, gonna go see Lulu's new baby afta skool(she wants another), and everything but learning.
The boys are the worlds leading experts on NFL football, but their real love is World Wrestling Federation or Ultimate Fightin', tellin about how they are gonna get high after school, join the Marines, that gangsta was followin us on Ave yesterday, gonna light him up, f'n this & f'n that, gonna play ball at university (sure you are, you can barely write your name), "I got me 2 beetches", doin the hand jive, but " I ain't never read no book in my life". (the famous, but seldom seen, triple negative)

About the story thing...

I used to have a hard time with the multiple unrelated stories. I finally learned to interrupt them and say, "Save it for later", or "Tell me at recess". That usually ends the stories on a positive note.
Ironically, I hated subbing in first grade and below, because the students are so needy. Now, I am a para for first grade, kindergarten and pre-k. I love it. I guess that's because someone else is handling the classroom management and I focus on the students who need that extra help. I am going for my teaching degree, and I believe I would like to teach first grade. I still don't think I would be very good below first grade.

have to agree with augustus on 9th

Out here, they are just beginning high school and it's like they have reverted to being 10 years old! It's strange--I've been subbing three years now--I will see the same kids in 8th grade, and then they start high school and turn into different animals!

Another odd thing that my district does...in 6th-8th, they put some of the more on top of it kids in accelerated language arts (English & SS), but when they get to high school, they dump them all back into the same classes for those subjects. I think it makes all the students crazy...

High school

I like high school the least, and took myself off the list for everything but Special Ed, French and Latin. Not sure if I would accept a job in the latter two subjects though...

I have found that too many students in the h.s. in this town will make no effort whatsoever to do the assignment. Even if you talk to them, and ask them to get started, etc., they will just ignore you. Our h.s. is on block scheduling and I can't deal with watching a student just waste a whole 90 minute period; it was bad enough when each class was 45 minutes. It's too bad, because I would be happy to Substitute Teach there if the large majority were quiet and well-behaved.

I do not like...

...5-8 at all. I have tried, but they are so snotty and disrepectful. Kdg is ok, but if it is a full day Kdg, then by the end of the day I am beat! I enjoy 1-4 the most.

Don't like

I don't like anything from sixth through freshmen. I have had some bad sophomore classes too, but usually by the time they get at that age, they have matured a bit.
I was in a freshman algebra class today and I have to go back tomorrow. The teacher I am subbing for is team teaching with another teacher who has not control. The day has been a nightmare. I REALLY don't want to go back. I am only in the room for two class periods by myself, so I shouldn't really complain, it's just the clock hands don't move very fast during the time.

Yeh, I notice this too. Everywhere I go. If it is like this throughout the USA then this country is headed for third world status. What gets me is how the school admin will pat itself on the back and tell everyone what a great job they are doing. No, you aren't, but it isn't your fault. the little dumb clucks show up at school with no intention of learning a thing, not a thing.
Augustus ( who spent the day arguing with 7th graders) Well, I didn't argue, I tired to explain and they argued. Another group who thought they didn't have to listen or do a thing.

You know, if you make no effort then why should the taxpayer have to foot the bill for you. Quit school, go do something somewhere and leave school for those who want an education.

a post for Augustus

"gonna light him up, f'n this & f'n that"

8th and 9th boys are just plain VIOLENT with eachother!

I taught 8th graders in Art last week...Hellish!
One boy was talking about "shanking" the other one!!!! I screamed at them! I didn't care if they were joking or not...I don't want anyone talking about cutting eachother open!!!

And mind you, this was at a RURAL school district. Most kids come to school wearing the boots they went out in the barn to milk cows that morning.

I second those emotions.

I swear, I am not all America First (usually), but things today are scaring me...An education obtained through many of our schools means nada...and I work in a GOOD DISTRICT, one with $$$$$.

Recently, though my other job, I had the "pleasure" of trying to iron out some travel problems with United Airlines....for hours....I got very frustrated with trying to deal with the foreign accents, excuse me...finally I asked if there might be an American to speak to.....it turns out that ALL THEIR TELEPHONE STAFF IS BASED IN INDIA!!!!

UNITED AIRLINES FOLKS! And that is the tip of this immense iceberg.

Not that other countries shouldn't thrive. However, I fear that America is going down the tubes and will end up exactly like the India's of the world...the third world that is...

rant over.

No 6th, 5th or kinder

6th and 5th act like Kinder,
both you feel as if you accomplish little!

I subed for preschool once and that was enough for me! I had to repeat myself 12 times and I spent most of my time running after kids who were not doing what they were told to do. I'm also not too thrilled with subbing for k-2. They are just too needy for me. I love 3-6, they are much easier to work with. I can give them an assignment and take some time reviewing the lesson plan. Plus they all need you right this second!! Even when they do need you. most of them have the patience to wait.

pre-K and K graders because they spend most of the time wondering a bout. although i have to say that they don't know how to respond to you like other graders. i love them because they are adorable, but umm, it's so hard to teach pre-K and K graders. i have only subbed for one 7th grade, and i sent one kid to school because he was behaving so badly that day, but i don't think 7th grade should be counted as a grade i don't like to teach.

I'd say anything below third grade (though even third grade is a bit of a challenge for me). Little kids are cute, but so needy! I like middle school, though I realize it's a tough age group. I like how middle schoolers are still young, but a lot more independent.

I haven't subbed for high school YET, but have my first high school job coming up on Monday. (It's in my former high school, so that might make it easier since I know some of the teachers.) I don't know how I'll like subbing for high school, but who knows? Maybe I'll say that's the grade levels I like to sub in the least.
