Where do you keep/organize your mail?

I am trying to be more organized. I don't have an office and but created a space in my kitchen with a small bakers rack to keep mail and papers I need to go through. It is at the end of a counter and out of the way but it never stays organized and most often spills out onto the counter. My original thought was that there is plenty of room for current mail and I would have to limit myself to that amount of space. It is not working. I will once again attempt to get rid of the things that need to be stored in files or elsewhere but I am wondering where else I can keep everything.

Basket

I bought a basket that was tall enough and wide enough to hold 4 pocket file folders, one for each member of the family. It works for everyone but my husband, who gets way too many catalogs and bulk mail for his side business. I started throwing the catalogs away.<!--giggle-->

To cut down on the clutter I went paperless with as much stuff as I could. Just about all my bills come via email now. I go through the mail as soon as I get it and throw away the junk immediately. Anything that needs to be kept is put into a decorative box on my bookshelf. I have a box for each family member and then one for things that need to be dealt with asap. Those boxes are mostly empty though because after going paperless for the bills we don't really get much else.

paperless

I agree - go paperless with as much as possible. That saves a bunch. Our mail used to stack up on the counter and it drove me crazy.

Now I go through it as soon as it comes in. I stand over the trash can and toss/rip everything that's junk. Anything that needs to be kept goes in the file cabinet or in a small basket if it's a bill that isn't paperless. It gets paid as soon as possible so it doesn't stay there long!

Thanks - I signed up for emails from the 52 weeks to organization website. I will eliminate as much clutter as I can today and try to start fresh. I think my system will work if I clean out the older "junk" that I just don't know where to put. Bills aren't really the problem since I do have an area for them - out of the way. I need to make myself go through everything else immediately. I can do this!
