Write your own textbook

I am curious if anyone knows about writing your own textbook. I am not happy with the selection of social studies textbooks on the market. I have ideas for what I would want in a textbook for my classroom. How do you approach the task of writing a textbook? How do you even start? Should I contact a publisher? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I would

contact publishers and talk with a represenative. Sometimes they do hire teachers to help write textbooks. If not, why not try a small publisher like Crystal Springs who do like working with teachers and get a supplemental book published. Just an idea..
