Asking for my son. He was absent two days. I got work the second day and he did almost all of it immediately and willingly, worked very diligently for at least 30-45 minutes, not wanting to take a break. He put off doing the tracing of the name and writing it. I read the directions to him and said make sure to use the lines. He had a lot of trouble. It took him awhile to do it and he was getting frustrated. His writing isn’t horrible, he just doesn’t seem to be able to use lines and form his letter correctly. Should I do something or just have him do the work however and have his teacher tell him he didn’t do it correctly? Here is a sample of his writing(which he loves to do).

Question: Did you write this out for him and he copied from another paper? Did he do it all himself? I assume you helped him with spelling. Did you just tell him the spelling?

Personally, if he can already write letters like this, tracing dotted lines of big letters is just busy work.

At this stage (I'm assuming he just started kindergarten) letter formation is more important than being on the lines. I would work with him on correct formation and not worry about the rest. His writing looks great!

I did nothing for him. He announced he was making a card. I didn’t help with any of it, including spelling. He has been into spelling for a couple of years, spell it once and the odds are he will remember it. I kept a sight word game from my teaching days-he loves it. His ability astounds me.

So should I print out letters with arrows so he forms them correctly or whatever the teacher sends home do?

He is doing awesome. Honestly, unless his teachers say he needs extra work, I would let him do what he wants and just work on enriching. That is a darn fine job he did.

Kindergarten writing

At this point in kindergarten, children should not be writing on lines. That is not DAP. As previous posters stated, correct letter formation is more important.

Great job!

As a first grade teacher, I would be thrilled if my students wrote like that at the beginning of the year! It’s neat and easy to read. Let his teacher work on letter formation with the class. Some methods vary. We are using Handwriting Without Tears, which is a bit different than others I’ve taught.
