Hi. Our class is nearing the state test of the long comp.!!!!! I am trying to let the students have more "independence" in writting the practice long comps. but they just seem to want to be guided along. We have gone our the 6 traits of writting and I have seen they can do it. This is my first year teaching in a grade that they need to write a long comp for the state test. I dont know what to do....should I help them more or see what they struggle with and focus on that for the next few mini -lessons??? But once again it seems like we are running out of time!!!

Hello! I am just curious as to what state test you are taking?
I am not a huge fan of 6 + 1. It is the new focus at our school. However, if your kids are struggling with paragraph formation I really found 4 Square to be successful.

If you are more specific, I could help you out more in a more accurate manner. Are they responding to a picture prompt and a poem prompt on the test?

Let me know and I will get back to you!

HI. It is the Massachusetts state test. They are responding to a prompt and writting a personal narrative ( 5 para.). They will also have to write an open response prompt later for the test. The school really pushed the 6+1 and I think it MIGHT be to late to introduce a new method??????

I am teaching fourth grade for the first time in New Jersey and am really anxious about the test next month. Do you have any suggestions for the writing component?

NC writing test

I teach in NC and we are preparing for our writing test March 7th. We will be given a prompt. However, like the previous posts my children are use to me guiding them. I have given them old prompts from years past and had them write as if it was the real thing. I got good results. We cannot help them on the test so they need to be independant. We are all stressed but we write on!! We use the 6 traits and I have referred to Lucy Caulkins. I also use a book called, "Blowing away the state assessment writing test" by Keister (I think that is the author) This book has sample prompts and activities to prepare the children.
